Annual crude oil production
How much oil does the US produce?
This chart measures crude oil production, which is unrefined petroleum pumped from underground reservoirs, before it is processed into fuels and other products.
This data is based on annual production, and is measured in millions of barrels. You can explore this data by state, and view changes in production over time.
Monthly crude oil production
The previous chart showed annual production of crude oil. This chart looks at monthly production, which shows — in more detail — larger swings that reflect either supply or demand shocks.
Proven oil reserves
How much oil does the United States — and individual states — have? We can measure this using "proved reserves", which is shown in the chart.
Proved reserves are the volumes of oil that can be economically recovered using today's technology and at current prices. Reserve figures can change over time; they can fall as reserves are extracted and used, or increase if new fields are discovered, or extraction becomes more feasible and economical.
Natural gas gross withdrawals
Natural gas production and resources is measured using various metrics. The next sections will cover three of them: from the broadest measure, to the most narrow. The first metric is "gross withdrawals" of natural gas, which are shown in the chart. Gross withdrawals is the total volume of gas extracted from the ground, before it is processed or removed. You can explore this data by state using the map, or marimekko tabs, and see how production in each state has changed over time.
Natural gas marketed production
The next metric is "market production". It is one level down from gross withdrawals. It's gross withdrawals minus the gas that never reaches the market; gas that is reinjected into wells to maintain pressure, vented or flared off, and non-hydrocarbon gases that are removed during processing.
What's left is the gas that makes it into supply chains. The overall trend is very similar to gross withdrawals, but shifted downward due to these losses.
Dry natural gas production
Finally, we have "dry natural pas priduction", which is actually the metric that is most commonly quoted for "natural gas production".
It is marketed production minus natural gas liquids — hydrocarbons such as ethane, propane, and butane — and remaining water vapour. What's left is natural gas (methane) that's ready to be transported via pipelines. It represents the gas that is delivered to households, businesses, industry, and power plants.
Coal production
Both oil and gas production in the US has increased substantially in recent decades. The opposite is true for coal, as you can see in the chart, which measures coal production in millions of short tons.
American production increased from the 1960s through to the early 2000s, but extraction has since fallen back to 1960s levels.
Biofuels production
The US also dominates production of some non-fossil sources, particularly biofuels. It is the world's largest producer of fuel ethanol, which is blended into transport fuels across the country. Most of this ethanol comes from corn, with production concentrated in the Corn Belt, in states such as Iowa, Illinois, and Nebraska.
The chart below shows annual biofuel production, measured in millions of barrels. This includes fuel ethanol, biodiesel and renewable diesel.
Production of these fuels has increased rapidly this century in response to the federal Renewable Fuel Standard, which requires renewable fuel to be blended into transport fuel at a given concentration.
