An explorer for US electricity prices and household bills by state. Switch between the retail price of electricity (cents per kilowatt-hour) and the average monthly bill; pick a customer sector (all, residential, commercial, or industrial); and choose whether to show the level, its annual change, or its within-year volatility. All values are adjusted for inflation and given in 2024 US dollars.
Prices and bills come from the EIA's Form EIA-861 (Electric Power Annual). Nominal values are adjusted for inflation using the Consumer Price Index (all urban consumers) and expressed in 2024 dollars. "Annual change" is computed as the percentage difference from the prior year.
"Volatility" is the sample standard deviation of the 12 monthly real electricity prices within each calendar year (from the EIA's monthly price series), reported in cents per kilowatt-hour. Because there is no monthly bills series, volatility is available for prices only.
