Electricity consumption by state
How much electricity do states consume across all sectors? This chart shows total annual consumption, measured in terawatt-hours (TWh).
This does not adjust for population size (per capita figures are covered in the next section), so it reflects both consumption patterns, sectoral mix, and population.
Using the dropdown menu, you can explore this data for individual sectors: residential, commercial, industrial, and transport. Using the other chart tabs, you can see how consumption is changing over time, and the magnitude of differences between states.
Electricity consumption per person
How much electricity do Americans consume per person, and how does that vary across states? The chart shows annual electricity consumption, measured in megawatt-hours (MWh) per capita. It's based on a states total electricity consumption figures across all sectors; you can see this data for specific sectors — such as residential or industrial — using the dropdown menu.
Using the other chart tabs, you can see how consumption is changing over time, and the magnitude of differences between states.
Year-on-year change in consumption
How is electricity consumption changing over time? This chart shows the year-on-year change in consumption, measured in terawatt-hours (TWh). The next section shows this as the relative change.
States shown in blue had an increase in consumption compared to the previous year, while states in red had a decrease.
Annual relative change in consumption
This chart shows the same metric — the year-on-year change in electricity consumption — but as a percentage, rather than a terawatt-hour change. This allows us to see how consumption is changing relative to the current size of the electricity load.
Again, states shown in blue had an increase in consumption compared to the previous year; states in red had a decrease.
Electricity load growth
Rather than only showing the change in electricity consumption from year-to-year, this chart allows you to see the change over any period you select. For example, the change over the previous 5 years, or 10 years. Using the time slider at the bottom, you can select the start and end dates to measure over.
This measures the absolute change, in terawatt-hours (TWh) over that period. States with an increase in consumption are shown in blue; those with a decrease, in red.
Electricity consumption by sector
The previous sections look at total electricity consumption across all sectors, or each one-by-one. This chart shows the comparison across residential, commercial, and industrial users.
