The average retail price of electricity paid by US consumers, adjusted for inflation. Prices are reported annually by state and by sector — residential, commercial, and industrial — covering all 50 states and Washington D.C.
Nominal retail electricity prices are collected annually from electric utilities by the EIA through its Form EIA-861 survey. Average prices are computed by dividing total annual retail revenue by total kilowatt-hours sold, broken down by sector and state.
To adjust for inflation, nominal prices are multiplied by the ratio of the CPI in the base year (2024) to the CPI in each historical year, using the CPIAUCSL series from FRED.
