What this data measures

The share of electricity generation from each fuel source — coal, natural gas, nuclear, wind, solar, hydropower, and others — by state. This shows how the composition of each state's electricity supply has changed over time.

How this data is constructed

Generation data by fuel type are sourced from the EIA State Electricity Profiles, which aggregate Form EIA-923 data. Shares are computed by dividing each source's generation by total net generation in that state and year.

A note on negative values

EIA reports net generation, which can occasionally be slightly negative for a fuel — for example when a plant's own electricity use exceeds the small amount it generates in a year — producing a negative share for categories like "Other" or "Petroleum" in a few states. Because a negative share isn't meaningful here, any such values are shown as zero.
